Today I had the opportunity to lead the morning workout and stretches. Once we were done with the morning stretches it was on to a break. Discussing what we were going to do, we decided to play football and lacrosse. For those that wanted to play football, they went with the other Coaches, and the others went with me to play lacrosse.
It is always a learning experience with teaching a new sport to kids. Not many of the kids had heard about lacrosse, while some knew basic concepts. Unlike soccer and some other sports, lacrosse is a sport that is not the easiest and can be frustrating. During the lacrosse session, it was important for the kids to learn the basics; throwing, catching, and cradling (controlling the ball while they have possession).
Before handing out sticks to the kids they had to know that since they did not have the equipment that players do in the game, such as helmets, shoulder pads, mouth guard’s etc. that they were going to have to be careful with their stick and where they were throwing the ball.
Breaking the kids up with partners they were able to pass the ball to each other and try to catch the ball. Once they got the hang of that we transitioned into to shooting on goal. For a fun game we played a round of PIG (just like in basketball) to see who could aim for the goal. The kids loved it and talked about it the rest of the day. It was exciting to see as the session went on to see the kid’s progress in the fundamentals. By the end of the session, the kids had a good idea of the fundamentals of the game.
Due to being a coed camp, I taught the basic fundamentals of the sport of lacrosse to the individual kids that wanted to learn to play lacrosse. Since the rules of lacrosse for men and women are so different the basics were covered to the kids. To see rules, skills, and more information on the sport of Lacrosse for Girls/Boys you can look on the Projects Page under Girls/Boys Lacrosse to find out more information on the sport.
